The carnival’s purpose is much darker than just entertainment. Every Halloween, one person is chosen, marked as a sacrifice for a ritual, to ensure the carnival’s resurrection for another year. The exact nature of the ritual is shrouded in mystery, but those who disappear are never seen again, and whispers speak of souls being consumed to keep the carnival alive. Some say the carnival exists between worlds, an entity that can only maintain itself through these sacrifices.Despite the rumors, there’s something irresistibly hypnotic about the carnival. People are inexplicably drawn to it, unable to shake the feeling that they need to see it for themselves, as if the carnival itself beckons them in with a supernatural pull. However, after a terrible misfortune — a fire that claimed many lives at their original traveling show — they turned to forbidden rituals to resurrect their dying business. The head of the family, an ambitious man named Lucian Nightveil, discovered a book of ancient rites tied to an obscure, sinister entity — perhaps a demon or a forgotten god — that promised them immortality and unimaginable power in exchange for sacrifices.Desperate to save their crumbling legacy, Lucian and his family made a pact, and in doing so, bound their bloodline to the carnival and the dark entity it served. From that moment on, they were no longer entirely human. They became something else — eternally tied to the carnival, granted longevity and unnatural abilities, but at a steep price: they were cursed to maintain the carnival’s dark rituals, feeding it with the souls of the living to sustain their power and the carnival’s existence.The patriarch or matriarch, often referred to in hushed tones as The Ringmaster, controls the core of the ritual. The Ringmaster is rarely seen by visitors but is known to make the final decision on who will be chosen as the yearly sacrifice. Beneath them are their children, siblings, and other employees, each running the various attractions, like the haunted mansion, mirror maze, and rollercoasters. These members are bound to their attractions, often reflecting the personality and madness of their specific roles, blending their individuality with the eerie aura of the carnival itself.What sets the family apart from regular people is their disturbing, off-putting presence. Though they appear human, something about them is always slightly wrong — their movements too fluid, their voices too cold, and their eyes always gleaming with something otherworldly.

Born into a wealthy family in Grenoble, Claude Rochester's childhood was marked by strict expectations and emotional detachment. He sought darker, more mysterious environments, feeling the pull of something beyond mere entertainment. He eventually crossed the Atlantic, lured by the legends surrounding the Nightveil Carnival, in the outskirts of San Francisco. Drawn to its eerie, almost supernatural aura, he found a place where he could disappear from his past and indulge in the twisted games of the carnival.At the Nightveil Carnival, Roche took charge of the mirror maze. His manipulative, calculated nature fit perfectly with the disorienting, psychological trap of the maze. Here, he lures visitors into false senses of security, only to watch them unravel. Despite his eerie, detached persona, Roche is conflicted. He’s fascinated by the carnival’s darkness but can’t fully embrace the cruelty of the sacrifices. Sometimes, he finds himself protecting those who spark something human in him, though he always remains distant.
